National Data Shows Kids With Disabilities Face Deep Disparities – Disability Scoop

“Students with disabilities are more frequently absent from school and continue to be disciplined at far higher rates than their typically-developing peers, federal officials say.  New data released Tuesday from the U.S. Department of Education indicates that kids with disabilities are twice as likely to be suspended and they account for two-thirds of those secluded or restrained at school.”

Call for Proposals: NYS CEC Convention 2016 – Buffalo, NY – Nov. 4-5, 2016

It is with great excitement that NYS CEC announces the opening of the call for proposals for the 63rd annual conference to be held November 4-5, 2016 in Buffalo, NY. The theme this year is Success for All, and we are looking for proposals that address evidence-based practices, transition, autism, and other issues in SPED. WIOA Helps Individuals with Disabilities Pursue and Obtain Well-Paying Employment Opportunities | Disability.Blog

From Disability.blog : “…WIOA also makes an attempt to limit the pipeline of people with disabilities moving into non-integrated, sub-minimum wage jobs. Now, before an individual with a disability can be placed in such a situation, he/she must have received ‘pre-transition services’ while in high school to ensure that the proper support and preparation occurs before the student enters the workforce. The student must also have applied for services through the local VR program. Under WIOA, the goal of the VR program in each state is to help individuals with disabilities to ‘prepare for, secure, retain or regain employment.'”

Transformation Agreement | OPWDD

From NYS OPWDD: “New York State and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services CMS have identified a series of shared goals that will improve opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities in the areas of employment, integrated living, and self-direction of services. These goals are captured in a transformation agreement. They include:

  • Developing new service options to better meet the needs of individuals and families in a truly person-centered way, including allowing for more self-direction of services;
  • Creating a specialized managed care system that recognizes the unique needs of people with disabilities, and is focused on a habilitative model of services and supports;
  • Ensuring that people live in the most integrated community settings;Increasing the number of individuals who are competitively employed;
  • Focusing on a quality system that values personal outcome goals for people, such as an improved life or access to meaningful activities; and
  • Working to make funding in the system sustainable and transparent.

To support the transformation agreement, OPWDD will have access to additional funding and technical assistance through the federal government’s Balancing Incentives Program. OPWDD will also begin participating in New York’s Money Follows the Person demonstration, which lends federal financial support for individuals who wish transition from institutional settings into community settings. Nominate a White House Champion of Change for Disability Employment | The White House

From the White House: “Today, we’re asking you to help us identify and honor innovators who are breaking down barriers to the middle class by providing employment opportunities for workers with disabilities, including workers with significant disabilities. These extraordinary leaders will be invited to the White House to celebrate their accomplishments and showcase their actions to ensure that individuals with significant disabilities have a fair shot at succeeding in good jobs and careers. Please nominate a Champion of Change by midnight on Sunday, September 14, 2014.  We are seeking Champions who reflect the diversity of our nation, including diversity of types/visibility of disabilities and veterans with disabilities.  Nominees may include the following types of individuals:

  • Small business owners who have lead efforts to hire workers with disabilities, including workers with significant disabilities, and who have hired and retained one or more workers with significant disabilities and a workers who are helping to build that business while gaining middle class security.
  • Managers within large or medium sized employers who have developed effective initiatives for the hiring, retention and/or promotion of people with disabilities, including workers with significant disabilities.
  • Entrepreneurs with significant disabilities who have established successful businesses and are now employing others in a successful venture.
  • Leaders within companies or organizations who have disclosed hidden disabilities and have initiated efforts to educate others about employment of people with disabilities.
  • Public/private partnerships between employers and a state or local governments, colleges, foundations, or other entities that have developed effective collaborative initiatives focused on increasing competitive integrated employment for people with disabilities, including people with significant disabilities.”
