Dear Parents, Guardians, and Professionals who work with youth and young adults who are deaf or hard of hearing,
My name is Kaitlyn Millen and I am a doctoral candidate in the School of Special Education at the University of Northern Colorado. My research focus is students who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) and self-determination. An exciting new measure of self-determination has been translated into American Sign Language. However, I need your help to determine if the survey produces valid and reliable scores and understand what self-determination looks like in youth and young adults who are DHH. My dissertation results will inform our field about self-determination strengths, needs, and assessment with students who are DHH. As the CEC Initial Specialty Set: Deaf and Hard of Hearing teaching standards were recently updated and now include knowledge of self-determination skill development and assessment, this is timely and important research.
How you can help: All youth and young adults ages 13-22 who have a hearing loss are invited to participate. I am recruiting a large number of individuals who are DHH ages 13-22 to complete the brief (15 minute) self-determination survey. Participants will be entered into a drawing to win a $50 gift card of their choice to Amazon, Starbucks, or iTunes. Additionally, teachers and parents will receive one entry for every student they recruit who completes the survey into a separate drawing for teachers and parents to win a $50 gift card of their choice to Amazon, Starbucks, or iTunes. To participate write “m99” in the last name field and complete this survey:
https://bit.ly/2PnkfJL. The survey is interpreted in ASL and may also be completed by individuals who do not know ASL. Tip: The survey does not work well on phones but works well on computers or tablets. When you/your students have completed the survey, use this link to be entered into the drawing to win the gift card: https://bit.ly/2I2HWTb
By completing the survey in the above link, the individual is providing consent to participate in this study. There is no risk or cost to participate. The participant may stop taking the survey at any time. If you have any concerns about your child’s treatment or your treatment as a research participant, please contact the Office of Research, Kepner Hall, University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, CO, 80639; 970-351-1910. Thank you for your help with this important research!
